The 9th infantry division in the Vietnam War.

The early History of the 9TH Infantry Division.

The 9th Infantry Division, known as "Old Reliables," was established during World War I but did not see combat overseas. It was officially formed as the 9th Division in 1918 at Camp Sheridan, Alabama. The division was reconstituted in 1923 and later became an active combat unit during World War II and the Vietnam War.

The division was among the first U.S. combat units to engage in offensive operations during World War II. It saw its first combat on November 8, 1942, during the North African campaign, landing in Algiers and participating in significant battles throughout Tunisia and Sicily. The 9th Infantry Division played a crucial role in the D-Day invasion at Utah Beach on June 10, 1944, and continued to fight through France and into Germany, contributing to the liberation of Europe.

In the Vietnam War, the 9th Infantry Division was activated for combat in 1966 and became known for its operations against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. The division was involved in numerous significant battles and operations, including the formation of a Mobile Riverine Force and played a key role in suppressing enemy activities during the Tet Offensive in 1968. The division's efforts resulted in substantial enemy casualties and contributed to U.S. military objectives in the region.

The 9th Infantry Division has a important history record marked by bravery and significant contributions to U.S. military efforts in both World Wars and Vietnam.
